DETAIL OF THE PLACES VISITED

  • Club Cannottieri Italiani: In 1908, the Prince of the Abruzzi, made several trips to Argentina. During one of these, he witnessed a regatta organized in his honour in the waters of the Paraná Delta.

The Prince expressed his wish that in the future those waters would be crossed also by boats with the colours of the Italian regatta club. Therefore, on 1 January 1910, the Canottieri Italiani club was formally constituted, inspired by the Venetian and Byzantine styles of medieval times. After three months it already had 780 members, a group of young Italian founders who after an intense campaign with the support of the Italian press and associations, etc., gathered memberships and funds to enable the founding of an Italian rowing club.

On 29 March, 1911, the official inauguration of the headquarters took place, under the flags of both nations. Subsequently, the club acquired a property adjacent to its land called “Quinta Vivanco” which currently serves as the club’s headquarters.

New works were inaugurated in November 1921 with the assistance of the national authorities and club members, and now it boasts soccer fields, an equipped gym, a heated swimming pool, paddle tennis courts, ping-pong tables, boating and rowing equipment, tennis courts, and racquetball courts. The club currently has approximately 1,200 members.

  • Buenos Aires Rowing Club: Founded in 1873 and installed in Tigre since the beginning of the century, it enjoys one of the most spectacular natural settings of our country.

Based on the extensive opportunities afforded by the Delta, the Buenos Aires Rowing Club offers access to sporting activities to all ages, in particular rowing and boating, both competitive and leisure.

It has rowing boats, tennis courts, a gym, a swimming pool, a games room, gardens, spacious changing rooms and, for those who want to stay until the next day, the headquarters offers comfortable rooms.

A Tudor-style building with large rooms for parties, a cozy dining room with warm lighting and a crackling fireplace in winter, serving excellent food, a bar and very pleasant confectionery. Luminous galleries link it with its interior patio.

Buenos Aires Rowing is a club for families or single people who like a healthy life, who love nature and cultivate friendships in a context of tradition and moderation.

  • Club L’Aviron: Founded in 1920, the L’Aviron club is one of the oldest clubs in the city of Tigre. It is a classic family club, where members pursue outdoor sports. The majority of the current 480 members are descendants of prior members, usually of families of French origin.

The club has striven, in all its social and sports activities, to maintain a high degree of conviviality among its members.

It covers an area of 20,000 m2, including tennis courts, rowing boats, soccer fields, a swimming pool, a fencing room, a gym, a party room, and a tree-lined recreation area for its members.

  • Tigre Boat Club (TBC): Founded in Buenos Aires on 17 July 1888 as a break-away from the “Buenos Aires Rowing Club”. Its creation is due to the initiative of a group of English rowers, who, noticing the development of the sport, decided to found a club exclusively constituted by them.

The club was constituted when the organizing committee was established and that day was attended by 70 members.

After the foundation, the organizing committee asked England for 9 tour boats, some of which are still in use today, with which the sporting activity began. The Tigre Boat Club, was the first to be founded in the city of Tigre.

While the club specializes in rowing, like many of the clubs in the area, and so has a large hangar where the boats for rent are stored, it also has facilities for billiards, swimming, paddle tennis, squash and volleyball.

  • National Naval Museum: It is a dependency of the Argentine Navy, under the auspices of the General Secretariat of the Navy, which is part of the Argentine Ministry of Defence.

Its mission is to raise awareness of maritime and naval history, culture and traditions in the community. To do this, it carries out tasks of conservation, research and communication of the cultural heritage, organises exhibitions and presents significant historical facts and characters in the history of the Navy.

  • Tigre Art Museum: It occupies what was the former headquarters of the Tigre Club. Inaugurated in 1912, its objective was to promote recreation through social and sporting activities with regattas and tennis practice among its main interests. By 1927, a casino was installed in the main hall of the ground floor, which was dismantled in 1933, when gambling was banned in the vicinity of the capital.

The original design of the building was undertaken by the French firm Dubois and Pater, the same architects who designed the private palace that currently houses the French Embassy. An outstanding example of neoclassical architecture at the end of the nineteenth century, its spacious halls are decorated with precious materials: iron for the gates, Carrara marble for the stairs, Slavonian oak for the floors, bronze and gilded ornamental details. Great orchestras and enthusiastic dancers filled its rooms and terraces in what was called the Argentine Belle époque.

In 1974, the mayor Néstor Pozzi expropriated the building of the Tigre Club and, in 1979, it was declared of national historic interest due to its distinctive architectural values. Years later, in 1998, the Municipality of Tigre began its restoration to use the building as an art museum.

The floor of the building is composed of two large central rooms with smaller ones on each side. The hall on the first floor, originally a ballroom, has a vaulted oval ceiling decorated with a work by the Spanish painter Julio Vila Prades, representing a group of mythological beings – nymphs – playing a variety of instruments. An imposing bronze chandelier and crystal chandeliers crown the vault. At the opposite end of the hall, an idyllic walkway lit by decorative lanterns projects its elegant silhouette towards the bank of the Luján River.

The Tigre Club was a dream palace for the elite of Buenos Aires, who enjoyed sports and social activities there.

  • El Descanso Island: Located in the Delta, on the Sarmiento River, it is a garden where landscaping, outdoor art and nature come together to reveal the best representation of the Paraná Delta in Tigre.

In a confluence of nature and landscape, outstanding outdoor art works of renowned contemporary Argentine artists such as Pablo Reinoso, Bastón Díaz, Vivianne Duchini, Carlos Gallardo and the great masters José Fioravanti and Antonio Canova, among others, harmoniously complement the beauty of the garden.

Many of the sculptures were designed, sculpted and set up, by their authors exclusively for the El Descanso Island Garden, creating a fusion of nature, landscaping and outdoor art.
